For 2 years before Father Metzler died, I started going to noon Mass at St. James. Don was ALWAYS there; since the reorganization of the parish and retiring, I have started to go to Mass as often as possible at 9 am daily. Don was ALWAYS there. Don had an enormous love for the Eucharist.–he was at 9 am Mass daily Monday thru Saturday, and of course, Sundays. For me his faithfulness to the Eucharist was a shining example of how i, too, should live my life. What a wonderful example he has been to all of us. I shall never forget him for that. I could hardly believe it on Tuesday morning when I was told he had died. He has been at mass on Monday morning. Eternal rest grant unto him Oh Lord, and let your perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all who leave this world in your Friendship, rest in your eternal peace.

    “Tis a Fearful Thing.

    ‘Tis a fearful thing
to love what death can touch.

    A fearful thing
to love, to hope, to dream, to be –

    to be,
    And oh, to lose.

    A thing for fools, this,

    And a holy thing,

    a holy thing
    to love.

For your life has lived in me,
    your laugh once lifted me,
your word was gift to me.

To remember this brings painful joy.

    ‘Tis a human thing, love,
    a holy thing, to love
    what death has touched.”

My wife Marilyn attends daily Mass and keeps me up-to-date on our church friends . She always mentioned Don and his devotion to the Mass even though he used a “walker” to get around. Also being a 44-year retired police officer Don wanted to meet me. At my age, I don’t make friends easily but when I met Don about 2 years ago, he easily became my friend. We shared our common police experiences. I found that Don was a very intelligent, caring and respectful man who listened before commenting. Don was a good man, a gifted detective and a devoted follower of Christ. I am so thankful for God’s gift of knowing Don. Marilyn and I miss you.
