Darrell was one of the most understanding, compassionate, loving person I’ve known and will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathy to Patty and Laurel.
On behalf of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Air Quality management/staff, please accept our heartfelt condolences and sympathies. Darrell was a highly regarded colleague to those who champion a better quality of life for all. I enjoyed our personal talks before meetings when we would share stories about family and our mutual enjoyment of endurance athletics. It was an honor and pleasure to know Darrell. I wish you love, strength, and comfort.
My wife and I worked with Darrell for years before his retirement. I used to trade books with him and discuss science fiction and fantasy. Claudia and he shared stories of our families. He was cheerful and intelligent. I found him to be very understanding and accepting. He was definitely one of the best people we have known. He will be dearly missed. Our deepest sympathies to his family. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.
With heartfelt sympathy and love, I extend condolences to you and Laurel. My prayers of comfort, peace and wisdom continue to be my petition to GOD on your behalf.

Darrell was truly one-of-a-kind. A faithful friend who was more like a brother to me. I had the pleasure of working with Darrell for many years at the Allegheny County Health Department where his dedication to the work and the knowledge he possessed made him a very respected colleague both inside the Department and outside as well. I was fortunate to be able to continue our friendship when I moved on in my career and for that I am truly blessed. Rest in peace my dear friend – you will be missed more than words can say. And my heartfelt sympathies to Patty and Laurel. Stay strong – D Strong!
Larry and I send our heartfelt sympathies to the Stern Family.. Darryl was such a great guy that we’ve known for many years. May he now rest in the arms of our Lord
My deepest condolences to the Stern family. Darrell was a true professional and a good friend to many in our office. He left a lasting mark on the air monitoring program at the County Health Department. I always enjoyed the time we had to talk, whether regarding work or home. May he now rest in the love that continues to surround him.
