Jane Mildred Mihalik, 98, passed away on August 1, 2026, at William Penn Care Center.
Jane was born Jane Coughenour on April 20, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to George Washington Coughenour and Helen Bartley. She spent part of her childhood on a farm in Berlin, Pennsylvania, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse. During her life, she also made her home in Greenfield and Duquesne, Pennsylvania.
Jane was a woman of remarkable strength, determination, and independence. She raised four children on her own, building a loving family through perseverance, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion. She remained fiercely self-reliant throughout her life and continued living independently until the age of 98, an accomplishment that reflected her resilience, courage, and strong spirit.
She worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and continued her career until retiring at the age of 72. Her many years of service reflected the same independence, discipline, and work ethic that defined every part of her life.
Jane was an active and familiar member of the Duquesne Burns Heights community. She valued her neighbors, her friendships, and the strong sense of community she found there.
Although Jane never drove a car, she walked throughout her life and never allowed that to limit her independence or her sense of adventure. Later in life, especially after the age of 70, she discovered a great love of travel. She journeyed from the East Coast to the West Coast, visiting Nashville, the Florida Keys, California, and many other destinations. She also enjoyed cruises and embraced each new experience with curiosity and enthusiasm.
In her younger years, Jane loved to dance. She was an avid reader throughout her life and especially enjoyed mysteries. She also loved gospel music, particularly the Gaithers, whose songs brought her comfort and joy.
Jane’s Christian faith was at the center of her life. She was a strong believer in Jesus Christ and read her Bible every night. Her faith gave her strength through difficult times, guided the way she lived, and provided her with lasting hope and peace.
She was the loving mother of Linda Danlovich and her husband, Bob; Joseph Mihalik and his wife, Cherie; Patti Keller and her husband, Leroy; and John Mihalik and his wife, Wendy.
She was the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren and the cherished great-grandmother of 22 great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, too numerous to name individually, were an extraordinary source of pride and happiness to her. The size and closeness of the family she created stand as one of the greatest reflections of her life and legacy.
Jane was preceded in death by her siblings Thelma Bartley, Lee Coughenour, and Teddy Bartley. She is survived by her brother, David Bartley, along with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, neighbors, and friends.
Her family history also includes a traced ancestral connection to Betsy Ross, the woman traditionally credited with making the first American flag. It was a connection that added another meaningful chapter to Jane’s long and remarkable family story.
Jane will be remembered for her fierce independence, strength of character, deep Christian faith, adventurous spirit, love of reading and music, and, above all, her devotion to family. From her childhood on a Pennsylvania farm and her days in a one-room schoolhouse to her travels across the country and her independent life well into her 98th year, she met life with resilience, dignity, curiosity, and trust in God.
Her family will deeply miss her presence, her stories, her example, and the love she gave so generously. They take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, reunited with her beloved husband and those who went before her, and resting in the presence of the Lord.
