Dr. Bernard Robert Palus

Dr. Bernard Robert Palus, born May 20, 1939 in Johnstown, PA, son of Joseph and Anna Palus, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on December 16th, 2022, ending his battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles Palus, Agnes Berger, Daniel Palus, Sr. Emanuel Palus, Anne Burgo, and John Palus. He is survived by his partner of forty years, Diane Brown, his siblings, Joseph Palus and Mary Corona, his ex-wife, Virginia Palus, his children, Joseph (MaryAnn), Matthew (Emily), Benji, Jennifer (Jerry), Anne (Jeff), Pamela (Michael), and Ken (Anna), as well as eleven grandchildren and dozens of nieces and nephews.  After receiving a degree in medicine from Stritch Medical School at Loyola University in Chicago, Dr. Palus served as a flight surgeon in Vietnam, where he took part in over fifty combat missions and was awarded the Bronze Star for founding a local orphanage for the children of the war. He lived in several cities before he settled in Pittsburgh, PA, where he ran a prominent dermatology practice for over fifty years, retiring at the age of 78.  He was a kind and loving father, and a devoted partner to his longtime companion, Diane. He lived his life with verve, generosity, and fearlessness and he inspired the same in all who knew him, a constant example to others to savor each of life’s experiences, challenges, and peaceful joys.

Arrangements

As per the deceased’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers or donations, he can best be memorialized through personal acts of kindness, and by living a life with passion, and living it well.

Uncle Bernie is one of the roots to so many of my childhood memories. From his visits to Johnstown, to my visits to Pittsburg, to the amazing times at Indian lake and camping, he is part of those memories. I’ll miss you Uncle Bernie!

Starting as a patient and becoming a friend over the years with conversations about being in Viet Nan at the same time. He was very caring even saved my wife’s life when she had a bad allergic reaction. We miss him as a good doctor and friend.
