Genevieve Nemeth Yanek, 90, passed away Monday, March 5, 2018, with family at her side after a brief stay at St. Barnabas Nursing Home in Gibsonia. Born Oct. 18, 1927, in Mt. Pleasant, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Helen (Dzambo) Nemeth. She was a 1945 graduate of Hurst High School in Norvelt, where she played trumpet and drums. She also played trumpet in an all girls band during World War II. She loved music. In addition to trumpet and drums, she played the piano. A longtime resident of North Versailles, she worked in the domestics department at Gimbels at Eastland Mall for many years and was one of the original members of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in East McKeesport, where she served as an officer in the Confraternity of Christian Women and sang with the choir for more than 35 years. Her volunteer service with the Girl Scouts spanned many years, during which she was the leader of Troop 143 and a cookie chair. A talented seamstress and crafter who created handmade prizes for many family reunions and church functions, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, plastic canvas and embroidery. She was an avid angel collector. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, George Yanek; her eldest son, Lawrence Jerome Yanek; and her sister, Edna Nemeth Taylor. She is survived by her son, Richard Yanek (Grace), of Raleigh, N.C.; daughters, Candace Yanek, of Forest Hills, Cynthia White (Paul), of Gibsonia, and Lisa Yanek (Andre’ Martel), of Monkton, Md.; grandchildren, Lauren McAluney (Brian), Richard, Robert and Michael Yanek; great-grandson, Ford McAluney; and many special nieces, nephews and cousins
